Croan Cottages Autumn 2017
It’s been a good Summer in Kilkenny and we’ve even enjoyed a couple of nice, warm and sunny Autumn days recently! It’s been a busy Summer too, so we thought we’d show you some of what’s been going on at Croan.
A Taste of River Cottage course at Croan Cottages, October 28 & 29.
River Cottage at Croan Cottages
This should not be missed! We had so much fun the last time these lads were at Croan – and learned loads too.
We’ll forage, cook and cure during the day. We’ll have local food producers come to tell their story in the evening (over drinks) and we’ll enjoy a delicious 3 course dinner each night.
You’ll also get to sample all that you produce during the day. Be sure to bring an appetite!

Details of the course can be found on our website at: http://www.croancottages.com/Taste-of-River-Cottage-in-Ireland.htm

Introduction to Butchery Course
Our butchery course in June was a great success and Marie-Claire Digby, of the irish Times, wrote a lovely account of it in the Irish Times Weekend Magazine. 😁

We are planning to run another of these courses in the Spring. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for details.

In the Press
The Irish Times article wasn’t the only time we made it into the press recently. Croan has featured in two articles in Country Smallholding magazine in recent months as well as the Sunday Times and Anglo Celt.
Francis has also been a regular contributor to Drive! on KCLR radio. The monthly chat with host Ken McGuire is all about Food!

Farmers Calendar 2018

Our friend Martina
Fagan
has been producing a Croan Cottages Calendar for us for years now but this year Croan was used as the locatuion for the Farmers of Ireland Calendar. This will be out shortly and is a very different publication to our one!
Smallholding Shows

We’ve been busy at Food, Farming and Gardening Festivals too!
Following on from the success of the Smallholder Gathering at Savour Kilkenny last year, we were asked to host similar showcases of the Smallholder way of life at The Royal Welsh Show, Taste of Cavan and the Ballymaloe Garden Festival.
It was great to be able to talk to people at the festivals about food production and ‘growing your own’. We’ll have more of these banter sessions at this year’s Savour Kilkenny Festival, October 28th & 29th.

New Arrivals at Croan
One of the biggest hits at the Summer Shows was Bo, our new milking Cow. It was great to see kids having a go at milking and there were lots of questions about Cows and other animals.
We also had lots of young animals born at Croan including our very first Cria – a baby Alpaca.
Olga and her young son are doing well but we still haven’t settled on a name for the little chap. Any suggestions?
Turkeys from Croan
This year we are raising some Turkeys for Christmas. The birds are free range and get to enjoy fresh produce from the Garden.
If you would like to order a Turkey for Christmas, please get in touch soon as numbers are very limited.

New pages in the information folders

We’ve added new pages to the folders in the cottages which describe new attractions nearby. We’ve also included some pages to help younger visitors identify the trees and wild residents at Croan. There’s even a ‘Poo Trail’ fro them to follow
