Share on FacebookAt Croan Cottages, we’re lucky to sit in the heart of one of Ireland’s most storied counties. Kilkenny isn’t just a medieval gem, it’s a place where every time period has left its mark, from Neolithic tombs to 19th-century estates.
Whether you’re here for a short break or a week-long escape, there’s something deeply satisfying about taking a day to walk through the pages of Ireland’s history. Here’s a rough chronological guide to just some of Kilkenny’s heritage highlights; each one an easy drive from your cottage door.
Kilmogue Portal Tomb (The Giant’s Grave or Leac an Scail)
Tucked away in the peaceful Lingaun Valley, this is one of Ireland’s most impressive portal tombs. The huge capstone leans dramatically over upright stones—so large it’s earned the name “Giant’s Grave.”
Knockroe Passage Tomb
A truly special site at sunrise during the winter solstice, this Neolithic tomb features megalithic art and two chambers aligned with the sun. Nearby and utterly magical.
High Crosses of the Lingaun Valley
These carved stone crosses dotting the valley give a quiet but powerful sense of Ireland’s early Christian past. Many stand near former monastic sites.
Tullaherin Round Tower
This graceful 9th-century tower offers an enduring symbol of the early church’s presence in Kilkenny. The adjoining heritage centre shares more about the site’s history.
Aghaviller Church and Round Tower
Just down the road from Croan, The Round Tower at Aghaviller formed part of an early Christian foundation believed to have been founded by St Brendan of Birr. The round tower, built in the 11th century.
Kilkenny Castle
The grand centrepiece of the city, Kilkenny Castle dates to 1195 and was home to the Butler family for centuries. Now lovingly restored, it’s perfect for a rainy-day visit—or a picnic in the castle parklands.
St. Canice’s Cathedral & Round Tower
One of Ireland’s finest cathedrals, with gorgeous Gothic architecture and a round tower you can still climb (if you’re feeling brave!).
Black Abbey
Founded in 1225, the Black Abbey has seen fire, suppression, and restoration. Today it’s a peaceful, beautiful stop with stunning stained glass.
Jerpoint Abbey
This 12th-century Cistercian ruin is packed with detail—from carved saints to medieval grave slabs. Just outside Thomastown, it’s a wonderful spot for a quiet walk.
Duiske Abbey (Graiguenamanagh)
Tucked into the riverside town, this Cistercian abbey is one of Ireland’s hidden treasures and still serves the local parish.
Kells Priory
A short drive from Croan, this vast medieval ruin with its famous “seven towers” is perfect for a self-guided wander.
Rothe House & Garden
A 16th-century merchant’s townhouse in the heart of Kilkenny city, Rothe House is a treasure trove for history lovers and family researchers alike.
Shee Alms House
This Tudor-era charitable home was built in 1582 and now welcomes visitors as Kilkenny’s tourist information office.
The Tholsel
A distinctive 18th-century building in the city centre, long used as a place of trade and local governance.
Butler House and Gardens
Once the dower house for the Castle, now a serene hotel and garden escape.
Castlecomer Discovery Park
Built on the grounds of a former coal-mining estate, this woodland park includes interactive exhibitions that tell the story of Kilkenny’s industrial past—and offers tree-top walks, zip lines, and family fun too.
